Spread of solidarity from 172 kind souls of the Chinese Community to the Government Covid-19 solidarity Fund

Covid-19 has taken the whole world by surprise. Nobody was expecting such a pandemic to happen this year and to cause so many deaths in a such short period of time. However, since the beginning of this tragedy, we see every day the solidarity from people all over the world joining forces to fight this invisible war. Similarly, the Chinese Community has been contributing in different ways to help the Government of Mauritius and its people to overcome COVID-19.

Recently, although the Chinese Community in Mauritius is quite small, in its own modest way, 172 of them gathered together and contributed Rs 300,000 to the Government Covid-19 Solidarity Fund Account to support and help Mauritians affected by the pandemic.

And since the very start, there have been many benevolent activities. A prevention talk was held in February 2020 with the collaboration of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Mauritius, the World Health Organization and the Municipality of Beau Bassin Rose Hill and a few awareness campaignswere held in a couple of shopping malls and six primary schools. When Covid-19 reached Mauritius in March 2020, several donations of medical equipment, including Personal Protective Equipment, from Jack Ma Foundation and thehealthcare staff from Guangzhou and Beijing were sent to Mauritius for our frontline staffs. Some volunteers have also ensured that our elders get their medicine delivered during the lockdown period.

Hopefully many more will follow the gesture of the 172 kind souls. In this period of crisis, when we are living in uncertain times, every spread of solidarity is a blessing.
